Mr. Edgardo Oque’s Organic Farming Enterprise Edgardo Oque is a 45-year old farmer with 7 children. Fifteen years ago, he engaged in farming using chemical fertilizer good for home consumption. The family had low income due to the high cost of farming. So his wife worked abroad to contribute to the growing needs of the family. Working outside is not easy. The cost of the family increased when the children started college.

The couple decided to start a commercial-organically grown vegetables using own organic fertilizer. Now, they maintain a 2,500 square meters’ land area which has increased income significantly. The family helped each other from production to selling. They can afford to buy bread which was not before; purchased their basic needs, paid school allowances, and capital for the agri-enterprises (vegetable and hog production).

They have also an organic swine enterprise and its income was used to pay tuition fees in college. His farm has inspired visitors from other countries. Encouraged other farmers to maintain their respective gardens; and the family will be the one to trade it. They also hired workers to labor in their farm. Their neighbors also saved from less price vegetables, no transportation cost and safe.

The spouse are members of the cooperative who provided trainings about conservation and protection of the environment. It was at this premise that the family started the organic farming technology and discovered that this enterprise sustains the family’s needs. In the end, the family realized that organic farming can be a good business.
