Guatemala

A dream come true for the whole village.

The village “La Mina” is located at 18 km from the county seat of Jocotán, a community of scarce resources only had the level of pre-primary and primary education.

One of the biggest dreams for community leaders was the creation of an Institute of basic secundary education. In 2004, efforts are initiated and achieved approval in 2005. The Ministry of Education approves and begins paying primary school classrooms, with one teacher to teach 11 courses to 20 students. This was a reality for 3 years.

Golden seeds for my community. Native corn

Golden seeds for my comunity. Native corn.

For decades corn has been the essential food item to every one’s life in Guatemala. There is a wide range of native varieties of corn in the region, with very good output and of high quality. They are resilient to plagues and diseases, as each of them has been adapting to its territory and climate.

The adventure of a teacher in rural Guatemala

An adventure of a schoolteacher

Welcome to the Village of Talquezal Which is located 20 km from the county seat (Chiquimula), Guatemala. The road is a dirtroad. In 2004 was created the NUFED n°102, an Educational Center providing secondary education with alternate training system. But one of the problems is arriving at the Center.

Palm Oil, a cancer for tropical woods

Palm Oil is the source of enrichment of many multinational companies. Companies that are being steered from the developing world.

But what is happening in the countries that are still developing where they plant Oil Palm plantations?

Beyond corn and beans.

I am from Guatemala, a very rich country considered for the origin for many species; like corn, bean and cocoa among others.
I´m proud to belong to the Mayan Q´eqchi´ tribe, one of several located at the north of Guatemala.

Big changes start with small actions

My name is Leonidas Hernandez, I'm from San Carlos Alzatate in Jalapa Before, I thought the training was only waste of time, that these activities were only those without work.

A Stranger in the Park

Hi, I'm Gabriel. My mother told me that I should go to school so that when I grow up, I could become a doctor, a lawyer, or maybe an engineer.

I really don't understand why anyone would want to be one of those boring characters, I want to be a superhero, although I like school; and in my class there are coloured pencils, crayons and modelling clay. My teacher is very friendly and teaches us songs.

Deforestation. Guatemala.

Hello, I am Onner de León, I live in the town of Poptún, in the department of Petén.
If we destroy our forests, we are destroying the quality of life of our children.
Deforestation in my department happens due to the high growth of the population; the extreme
poverty; the lack of productive projects; the low literacy of people; the implementation of monoculture;
the poor management of livestock production; the introduction of exotic plants such as the African palm
tree, the Gmelina Arborea, the teak; and the misusage of fossil fuels.

The Tree

It has been and it will remain as humans and living creatures’ best friend.
It converts carbon dioxide into oxygen, provides shade, acts as a habitat and provides food for many species of animals and plants.

Stop deforestation !

Hello, this is Donilson Geovany Herrera Vielman, I am 18 years old and I am a student of third basic year at Centro Educativo Nufed Nº 427 in the village of Las Pozas Sayaxché Petén.

I want to talk to you about deforestation in our country, this is a topic of great importance.
