My story is set in Senegal, more specifically in Tambacounda:
The SINVAD-project, an integrated system for cleaning and recovering household waste, is being implemented by the city, in cooperation with the city of Sint-Niklaas.
How can household waste become a resource?
I'm inspired to do this work at SINVAD to help provide solutions to the problems of household waste and illegal dumping in my municipality.
Composting is the natural process of decomposition of organic material.
Home composting of your biodegradable waste is beneficial for your garden and the environment. It makes the land workable and fertile, and provides better permeability for the water and air in the soil. It is a way of lowering the unemployment rate in our municipality and it helps to boost the industry.
Citizens and businesses will stop throwing rubbish on the streets and reduce illegal dumping, and they will also reduce their household waste.
We have set up groups of vegetable growers made up of young people and women who participate in the food supply of the municipality.
But it's not always easy. There are still problems of access to water and land for the citizens.
The use of compost increases the resistance of plants to diseases and provides a healthy diet for the inhabitants.
The food crops we grow are of good quality. They are different from those being grown with chemical fertilisers.
