During the Covid-19 pandemic, a desire for dialogue and the demand to foster widespread communication emerged among diverse cultural movements in the city of Crato, Ceará.
We started to discuss possibilities and ways to enable the construction of a communication vehicle that would be available to give voice and visibility to cultural and community agents and have a collaborative role. … That's how our Radio Cafundó Web was founded.
To put our collective dream into practice, we needed some equipment such as a computer, a console, a microphone For community broadcasting, we use loudspeakers in the four corners of our building… which used to be a former police station and is now administered by one of the cultural partners.
We do recording and broadcasting in a studio that we have installed in one of the rooms in the building. We pay a fixed cost for the Internet and for maintaining streaming or live transmissions from the site.
We started with public financing from a Cultural Emergency Fund, during the pandemic We recorded the programmes mostly via Whatsapp audios and then assembled them with a sound editing programme, in our case, Audacity.
We have the challenge of being careful regarding distancing during the Pandemic and adapting the studio's acoustics, avoiding outside noises and living with the hot conditions. Isolation and the lack of structure have made radio Cafundó carry out live programmes, as well as broadcasting from different locations where the presenters live.
We use our own computer and headphones to record or put on the air some programmes. We keep a regional musical and poetic collection online 24 hours a day.
I want to conclude by saying that it is possible to collectively build a community web radio.
Learning to radio broadcast in a collaborative way, creating exchanges of knowledge beyond our borders.
