The Female Rite of Passage of the Suruí People

The Suruí (or Paiter-Suruí) people perform a rite of passage from girlhood into adulthood, which occurs at the first menstruation.

It is carried out according to rules that comply with the customs of the people, such as spending a few months in the maloca (a type of traditional straw hut).

Local Currency of Carrapato Community, Ceará, Brazil

In the community of Sítio Carrapato, located in Crato-Ceará, there is a fortnightly fair for family farming producers called FEPROAF.
Always held on a Saturday, it is animated by cultural presentations, where small entrepreneurs and local artisans display and sell their products, preserving their traditions and building a more sustainable future.

Arca Project for 20 years transforming life in the interior of Cariri-Cearense.

Arca Project has been transforming life for 20 years in the interior of Cariri-Cearense.

Our mission is to create an educational practice with a focus of a critical reading of reality.
Generating changes in viewing the world and changes in attitude, defending life through solidarity.

Rural exodus: a current dragging dreams away

In a Rural Settlement in the Northeastern Sertão lives Raimunda, a young dreamer.
Raised between arid lands and dreams of a better life, Raimunda witnessed from an early age the departure of many of her friends and family in search of a better life in distant cities.

Illuminated Memories

“Wow... How everything changes.” That's what my 88-year-old aunt once said when she watched me ironing clothes.

Remember this?

This is our mind.
This is Esther’s.
Like almost everyone, she was born, grew up, dated, worked and had lots of dreams.
One day she begins to forget things.
Do you know what that is?
Because she doesn't.
And things that we do almost automatically.
She can't do anymore.
There were times when she would eat and a few minutes later would say,“It has been three weeks since I ate anything”
Esther never again thought like she used to. And just like Esther there are many Marias, Joãos, Fernandas and Silvios

Mandala System

We are Stephanie and Manuel, we study at EFA Dom Fragoso and we learned about the agroecological mandala.
A sustainable way of planting and raising animals. The mandala is a circular space where we grow vegetables, fruits and native plants. In addition, we raise ducks, which help maintain the balance of the system.
The ducks play an important role, as their feces are used as natural fertilizer, helping the plants to grow healthily.

An Education that Transforms Lives

The technical course in agriculture developed at EFA Dom Fragoso, located in Independência in the state of Ceará, brought about the transformation that allowed me to adapt to living in the semi-arid region.

Goat farming

I come to talk about the ´Menino Vaqueiro´ ( Cowboy Kid) production system at EFA Dom Fragoso, where goat farming is carried out. We are Ana Luiza and Gabriel, students at Escola Família Agrícola Dom Fragoso, located in the Santa Cruz community, Independência-CE.

At school, we learn how to care for goats, which are essential for the production of milk, meat and reproduction. The goats are acquired through donations from our parents/guardians and/or other collaborators, and even through purchases and exchanges.

The Seed House

Hello, my name is Carlos André Dias. I am a student at EFA Dom Fragoso, where the seed house system is developed.

Its objective is to unite us with the community and also with the school, exchanging and storing seeds.

In practice, students take seeds from school to home and bring them from their communities to school. We try to work only with native seeds.
