I am Cecilio, a farmer from the community of Carrizal in Yamaranguila, Intibucá, Honduras. I used to cultivate traditionally and had to migrate temporarily to other territories to obtain some income.
I did not have sources of employment that could satisfy my family's needs.
As farmers we have had limitations; lack of appropriate technologies, little financial support for agriculture, low organizational culture from our side, lack of land, unfavorable marketing for the small producer in order to help us access a better family welfare.
One way in which we can achieve the integral well-being of the family is by working on agricultural projects in an organized manner and with an acceptable level of technology.
In reality, most of us in the rural area live from what is produced in the countryside. Lately, we are also diversifying our work by producing handicrafts and microenterprises from consumer stores to strengthen our income.
With the learning of new technologies for agricultural production in controlled environments we have managed to develop production initiatives in tomato and chili, which represents a good profitability for us.
Currently, the development of tomato and chili cultivation in a staggered manner and in a protected environment has allowed us to obtain a permanent source of income, which has strengthened our family economy and our living conditions.
The process of integral formation in which we have participated has allowed us to organize ourselves in an association of Lenca indigenous agricultural families, technically supported by VECOMA, an organization for development of Belgian origin.
As a result of the positive response that this initiative of local economic development has given us, we have empowered ourselves in the process and remain motivated, because for each production cycle of 400 square meters in a period of three to four months, we obtain profits of up to 1000 dollars. That allows us to live with dignity.
So, we invite rural families to join in their own local economic development initiatives to empower their communities, and improve living conditions, by getting out of poverty.
