Goats, for example, can feed on plants that grow in dry areas, while large animals have more difficulty finding their own food. Furthermore, goats require less space, which makes things easier for small producers. Another advantage is that goats consume less water, which is essential in a region like the semi-arid region.
Despite these advantages, many producers still raise cattle out of tradition and a culture passed down from generation to generation.
Cattle raising has always been valued in the region, and many resist replacing it with goats. Larger animals, such as cattle, require more resources, making management more difficult and expensive.
Raising goats or other small animals also allows the herd to reproduce more quickly, generating profits sooner.
Therefore, in the semi-arid region, small animals are more sustainable and profitable for the region.
